Myths and facts about organ donation 

If I’m a registered organ donor, hospital staff won’t try as hard to save my life.

Myth

If you are sick or injured, hospital doctors and nurses will do everything they can to save your life. Your health is their priority. Organ donation only happens after every attempt to save a person’s life has failed.

Myth

If I’m a registered donor, doctors may not wait until I’m officially declared dead to remove my organs. 

Fact

If you are an organ donor, you will actually get more tests to prove you are dead than a non-organ donor.

I think organ donation is against my religion.

Myth

Most major religions and denominations support organ donation. Religions typically see organ donation as an act of charity and goodwill. This includes:  

  • Catholicism  

  • Islam 

  • Presbyterian 

  • Judaism 

Fact

I’m too old to be an organ donor.

Myth

There is no age limit for being a donor. Even if you are older, there may be someone the same age as you that is a match for your organ.
